Displayed below is a letter written by Hank Sanders to voters in Alabama. Mr. Sanders graduated from Harvard University law school and is a former Alabama state senator. He should know the law and that it is illegal to pay people to vote. Federal law states:
18 U.S. Code § 597. Expenditures to influence voting
Whoever makes or offers to make an expenditure to any person, either to vote or withhold his vote, or to vote for or against any candidate; and
Whoever solicits, accepts, or receives any such expenditure in consideration of his vote or the withholding of his vote—
Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both; and if the violation was willful, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.
Mr. Sanders’ letter is disturbing on many levels:
- It’s encouraging people to violate federal law thus to subject them to arrest and imprisonment.
- It reflects poorly on our citizens and state by saying that we are so backwards that we cannot think for ourselves and our votes can be bought.
If you don’t stand up and let people know this needs to be stopped immediately, who will? Our elected officials need to take action to stop this “Pay to Vote” scheme. Some may think that it’s OK because it pays an organization instead of an individual. Nevertheless, this is still paying for votes. Mr. Sanders may have come up with a “sleight of hands” to try to justify this, but it is still wrong. Rest assured this “Pay Off” will get into the voters pockets.
